National Design Centre

The National Design Centre is an important arts and cultural institution in Singapore, which also houses the headquarters of the DesignSingapore Council.

It is one of the primary gathering spots for creative businesses and artists in the country; showcases all things design.

The current building was once the St Anthony’s Convent from 1879 to 1994, after which it was home to both the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and the Chinese Opera Institute. SCDA Architects were commissioned to develop a proposal for the centre in 2011, and today it is an excellent hotspot of design and the arts.

Thoughtful architectural elements provide artists with quiet areas to share ideas, reflect, and collaborate. Day or night, the composition of light, voids, and solids create stunning contrasts from the inside that inspire.

Guided tours are available every Monday and Thursday at 10am and 2pm. Interested visitors are required to make advanced bookings. The tour takes you through the building where you will learn about its history and how it has helped shape the local arts community. You will be treated to an entertaining and educational programme filled with interesting information on how design has changed throughout the years while contributing to Singapore’s economy.

There are over 200 displays of fashion, product and industrial design, visual communications, and environmental design to browse through. The tour also includes a walk-through at the exhibitions in Level 1 and concludes with a hands-on activity that encourages you to express yourself through creative art. The centre’s facilities include a cafe, fashion and accessory boutiques, and gallery spaces.

Art and design enthusiasts can spend hours poring through the many learning materials and design exhibitions. Depending on the day of your visit, you may stumble upon an ongoing seminar or an exciting exhibition that are worthy of checking out.

The National Design Centre is located at 111 Middle Road in Singapore. Opening hours are 9am to 9pm daily.
