NUS Museum

The NUS Museum is located within the National University of Singapore and is Singapore’s oldest university museum.

Located in the main campus of the university, the fascinating collections focus on Asian artefacts, art, and materials; specifically those from India, China, and other countries in Southeast Asia.

The museum’s origins date back to 1955 when the previous University Art Museum was initially built at the University of Malaya. Michael Sullivan, the first curator of the museum, was instrumental in ensuring the museum could be utilised in educating students in Art History.

The museum’s collection reflects some of Singapore’s most significant years in history, combined with that of the university, to establish a national identity in the context of intercultural relationships and geography.

Today, the museum houses more than 8,000 exotic artefacts, art, and materials in its four collections: South & Southeast Asian Collection, Ng Eng Teng Collection, Lee Kong Chian Collection, and the Straits Chinese Collection.

The museum also oversees the NUS Baba House at 157 Neil Road, which is one of the last few remaining Straits Chinese homes in the country. Launched in 2008, the NUS Baba House was given as a gift by Ms Agnes Tan as a means of encouraging research and appreciation of the role the Straits Chinese played in Singapore’s history, identity, and architecture.

Guided tours (which are conducted in English) are available on request, but charges may apply. Groups of over ten people should notify the museum ahead of time with their intended time and date of visit.

Visitors should take note that only non-flash photography for personal use is allowed; for commercial video or photo, please get in touch with the museum to obtain permission. All floors within the building are accessible through elevators; ideal for wheelchair users.

The NUS Museum is located at 50 Kent Ridge Crescent. Admission is free, with opening hours from 10am to 6pm from Tuesday to Saturday.
