The spacious villa highlights the importance of the 1911 Chinese Revolution in Singapore, and more importantly, the island’s significant contribution to this period. The villa was built in 1901 by Boey Chuan Poh, a renowned businessman during those days. One of the most beautiful aspects of this colonial style villa is its unique design which features arched windows, louvred windows and floral designs on the eaves.

Over the years, the memorial was sold to different persons. During the Japanese Occupation of Singapore, the villa was used as a communication centre by the Japanese military. During this period, many artefacts and original fittings were destroyed. After the war, the government took up measures to restore the villa. In 1994, the government declared the villa a National Monument. It has since undergone restoration to its present state.

Currently, Sun Yat Sen Memorial is open to the general public and is a perfect tour for history buffs and art lovers. Home to hundreds of artefacts that range from sculptures to ancient books and old photographs, there is so much to see and learn while at the memorial.

A visit to Sun Yat Sen is incomplete without viewing some of its highlights. Look out for the bronze wall mural that spans to the rear end of the building. This mural captures the island’s remarkable growth over the years, from the 1840s to the 1940s. Key features of this mural include its humble beginnings as a fishing village as well as the devastating Sook Ching massacre.

There are also oil and water-based paintings created by local and Chinese artists on the second level of the gallery. You cannot miss out on the bronze statues scattered around the villa, all of which depict the people who took part in the revolution.

Sun Yat Sen Memorial is located on 2 Tai Gin Road in Singapore. The memorial is open from Tuesdays to Sundays between 10am and 5pm. The closest MRT station is Novena.
