Cavenagh Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in the country, and the only one of its kind. The suspension bridge is located on the Singapore River, and was initially constructed in the 1880’s to connect the opposing river banks.
This was done at a time when the country was still under the rule of the Government British India. The bridge was named after William O. Cavenagh, the then governor of the Straits Settlement. This iconic landmark stands strong, many years on.

One of the most stunning aspects of the Cavenagh Bridge is its lighting at night that brings to life its stunning architectural features. As one of the most convenient and reliable links between the north bank and the district located to the south of the Singapore River, the bridge is a must-visit when spending time in the city. Look out for the police notice erected at the time of the bridge’s construction, and which restricts vehicles, cattle and horses from using the bridge.
What’s more, the bridge is conveniently located next to the Fullerton Hotel, a resplendent five-star hotel that promises a luxurious vacation in close proximity to the commercial district. Other attractions near the river include The Marina Bay and the Singapore River Promenade.
Look out for the many sculptural works close to the bridge at the southwest abutment. The most notable of these is a family of Singapura cats, also known as drain cats. These cats are recognised as one of the tiniest cat breeds globally, and are easily identified by their big ears, eyes and blunt tail.
